You are a "victim" of acid erosion if you can answer yes to any of these Qs.
  • Are your teeth sensitive to cold or hot or sweets?
     
  • Do you notice grooves or notches in sides of teeth?
     
  • Have your teeth lost some of their luster or do they look yellow?
     
  • Are your teeth worn down? Have you experienced root cavities or lots of cavities?
     
  • Do the fillings on sides of your teeth look dull or washed out?

Sometimes there are no visible symptoms to patients. Sometimes there is severe teeth wear that patient cannot see. Sometimes there is a bad bite present.

Causes of Acid Reflux:
OUR MODERN DIET!

Fizzy drinks like colas even sugar free pop; a can a day or more.
  • Bulimia
  • GERD
  • Medications OTC or prescripted…many meds can cause dry mouth Dry mouth (xerostomia)-saliva actually neutralizes acid foods
  • Coffee
  • Fruit/fruit juices
  • Other acidic foods
  • Bruxism
  • Vigorous tooth brushing
  • Abrasive tooth pastes
The "cure" for acid erosion.
  • Most of the time it is diet related with acid containing foods causing the problem. Pop being number one of this group.
     
  • Avoid abrasive tooth pastes. Note: some tooth gels can be abrasive. Stop drinking pop, fruit juices, alcohol, and coffee or reduce dramatically.
     
  • Check up with GI doc to see if you have GERD.
     
  • Teeth grinding appliances.
     
  • Hydrogen Peroxide Gels/Fluoride treatments/fluoride custom trays.
     
  • Review with your hygienist tooth brushing technique.
     
  • Orthodontics/braces in some cases.
     
  • Have MD alter your medications. Counseling.
     
  • Take saliva inducing lozenges, trays, and rinses. Sugar free of course
