Apthous ulcers also known as canker sores cannot be healed quickly. They have to run their course. Usually that is about two weeks. There are some products that can alleviate some of the symptoms. If the problem persists longer than two weeks contact us or your regular dentist

Patients with few lesions can be treated with topical pain meds or anti-inflamatory ointments. Ointments include:

  1. Kenalog with Orabase - An effective short acting mouth rinse for multiple lesions is a viscous lidocaine rinse. Stronger than any of the OTC topicals like Benzodent and Orabase. Gary Smith, DDS brought this to my attention.

  2. Lidex plus Orabase mixed together. It is a steroid and a topical. This is a formula that Dr. David Hoffman, a periodontist. here in Omaha recomended it.

  3. Lidex is a fluocinonide ointment.

  4. Aphthasol is a new topical product on the market by the Block Drug Co. Do not know its efficacy personally. Feed back on this drug would be appreciated so we can share results with readers. Company claims amlexanox oral paste, 5%, the generic name, reduces healing time by one or two days.

  5. Zilactin. Some patients swear by it while others swear at it. Burns initially but then provides relief.

For more difficult cases: Dexamethasone elixor mouthwash combined with azathioprine tablets. Caution this is a potent immunsuppresing drug. Experience advised. Oral steroid therapy for 7 to 10 days. Prednisone 20 mg per day. Adverse effects of steroids need to be explained to patients. Some research indicates toothpaste as a culprit. You be the judge. Eliminate tooth pastes with sodium laurel sulfate which is soap.
