Toothache Pain and Orthodontic Problems
When you have a serious dental problem call Dr. Starkey's Dental Team for urgent dental care. 392.CARE (2273) Mon thru Thurs 8-5 & Fri. 8-2

WARNING
A tooth that wakes you up at night or causes swelling indicates serious problem. Call your dentist. Pain that goes away should not be ignored! Many times the first pain cycle that ends means the nerve is dying. It can be a warning that an abcess is the next stage, which means more pain and dangerous infection. Or it could be the sign of a heart attack. Don't place aspirin on tooth or gum. It will cause a burn.

Bleeding or complications from a dental visit?
Go to Dental Library and look under post op instructions.

Knocked out or broken tooth?
If it is the whole tooth place it in baggie or container with water and get to dentist with in an hour. It can often be put back in.

Broken Pieces?
If you have broken pieces in front -- sometimes the dentist can rebond.

Crown or Bridge
If it is crown or bridge that comes out do not wait too long to have dentist recement because teeth shift and it may not fit.

Temporary Measures until you can see a dentist:

Symptoms

It is possible that your tooth sensitivity is due to hyperemia, that is a tooth bruise that will go away.

Teeth that are tender to bite on can mean decay or that the tooth is cracked or filling or crown is loose.

Swollen gum can mean tooth infection, gum infection or wisdom tooth. Oral cancer usually causes no pain warning in early stages.

  1. Ibuprophen. (Assuming you can take these meds!) It is suppose to be more effective than aspirin and sometimes even codeine. Alternate aspirin, Tylenol type medication, and ibuprophen to avoid taking too much of the same kind of pain killer. And when one is wearing off the other is kicking in. Read directions on label. Don't overdose as if I need to tell you that. In the end no pain medication can mask the feelings of a horrible toothache.
  2. Oil of Cloves from the pharmacy or the grocery. Place on the tooth not the gum. DON'T use aspirin!
  3. Of course there are toothache medicines available OTC at your pharmacy.
  4. Sleep elevated. If you lay down the pressure builds up in your head and so does the pain.
  5. Ice packs or warm packs. Depending on the kind of nerve damage. You will have to experiment to see which helps.
  6. Mouth rinses.
  7. If no mouth rinse whiskey or other strong alcoholic drink mix. You can drink and swish over it at the same time. Will numb you and the tooth. Of course this is for adults only.
  8. Flossing can help
  9. Fill your own tooth. Pack the hole with gauze, wax or temporary product f/ Pharmacy.

Ortho Tips:

  1. If the wire is poking try placing wax or wet cotton over the end.
  2. If wire is out try taking tweezers to place it back.
  3. Take some wire cutters and cut the offending wire.
